THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE

MYOFACIAL RELEASE is used to treat musculo-skeletal dysfunction and the accompanying pain and restriction of motion Myofascial Release is a soft tissue therapy. Myofascial release refers to the manual massage techniques for stretching fascia and releasing bonds between fascia, skin, and muscles.

Often caused by long periods spent in poor postural alignment, an example of musculo-skeletal dysfunction would be; sitting at your computer for extended periods, your upper body begins to slump forward, in order to see the monitor you raise your head using your trapezius muscle. The trapezius muscle is now working at something it is not really designed to do, i.e. working continuously. Continuous contraction causes injury to the muscle. The Trapezius seizes up or spasms. Continuous contraction reduces blood flow to the area, which in turn, causes pain. Pain signals the cycle to begin again. Unless this cycle is interrupted by treatment, it becomes a self fulfilling situation. It will intensify leading to disability. Eventually, the pain-tension-decreased blood flow cycle will cause the muscle to develop painful trigger points.

NEUROMUSCULAR THERAPIES

TRIGGER POINT THERAPY or Compressive Release was developed in the 1940's by Dr. Janet Travel, Trigger Point Therapy is a massage tecnhnique that involves applying deep, focused pressure to tender muscle tissue in order to relieve pain and dysfunction. A trigger point is more than a tender spot in a muscle. Often incorrectly referred to as a knot, a trigger point is an area of tightly contracted muscle tissue. The tightness causes a marked decrease in circulation resulting in a painful, hyperirritable spot. Unlike a knot, Trigger Points cause a painful response at the "knot" with referred pain to other areas of the body.

SPORTS MASSAGE

INJURY REHABILITATION employs a variety of massage techniques to assist people suffering with the ongoing effects of illnesses, diseases, injuries and medical procedures. Injury Rehabilitation may involve; freeing up stiff or frozen joints, refashioning scar tissue or breaking up adhesions in order to promote flexibility and range of motion. This treatment enables your body to heal at an accelerated rate.

Injury Rehabilitation assists with healing by pumping more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs; improving joint movement, flexibility, strength and function.

PREGNANCY MASSAGE has evolved into a therapeutic massage form enabling pregnant women to go to term with fewer of the negative effects from the changes women's bodies experience.

The following list is some of massage's benefits during pregnancy:
  • Helps carry away the lactic acid and other cellular waste products that build up causing fatigue.
  • Muscular discomforts, such as cramping, tightening, stiffness, tension, and knots, can be alleviated.
  • Increases local and general blood circulation, which brings more oxygen and nutrients to the cells of both the mother and fetus.
  • By aiding circulation, massage eases the load on mom's heart and helps to keep her blood pressure in check.
  • Eases the load on mom's heart while helping to keep blood pressure in check and reducing the potential for life threatening ecclampsia.
  • Can help relieve pre and post partum depression or anxiety.
  • Doctors and Midwives agree that a relaxed mother will have a happier, healthier pregnancy and an easier childbirth experience.

DEEP TISSUE massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia (also called connective tissue). Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish Massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense and more focused.

Deep tissue massage is used to release long term or chronic muscle pain and restriction. Over time, restrictions gradually evolve into limitations in the elasticity of the muscle. No longer able to function as it was intended; the muscle becomes inflamed, develops reduced circulation, movement limitations, pain and adhesions (bands of dense, tight tissue often referred to as knots). Left unchecked, chronic pain patterns develop.
