Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia (also called connective tissue). Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish Massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense and more focused.
Deep tissue massage is used to release long term or chronic muscle pain and restriction. Over time, restrictions gradually evolve into limitations in the elasticity of the muscle. No longer able to function as it was intended; the muscle becomes inflamed, develops reduced circulation, movement limitations, pain and adhesions (bands of dense, tight tissue often referred to as knots). Left unchecked, chronic pain patterns develop.
When muscles are stressed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue. A deep-tissue massage helps loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly. As a therapeutic technique, Deep Tissue massage focuses on the deeper layers of tissue. Through slower strokes and more direct focused pressure, D. T. massage breaks up any restrictions in the muscle, promoting circulation while releasing pain patterns and tension in the body.
Deep Tissue massage is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas by reducing (or eliminating) chronic pain and muscle spasms. It also addresses stiff necks, sore shoulders and low back tightness. Musculoskeletal problems like Limited mobility, Postural problems, Osteoarthritis pain and Fibromyalgia are also effectively treated with Deep Tissue massage.
